Lucy ReadMaker in Focus

30 July - 15 September 2013

Lucy Read explores the continuing themes of comfort and nourishment as both staples of survival. Utilizing a range of materials often taken from every day use that play on multiple senses, she draws the viewer in creating an interaction within the exhibition space. Often these materials have a temporary or ephemeral quality reflecting the cyclic nature of life and an ever-changing society in need of sustenance. She is attracted to the notion of memory that can be evoked by touch and fragrance, sometimes pleasant, but more intrigued are we by those experiences that repulse and revolt.

Lucy’s fascination with space, material and process combine to create a practice based in sculpture, performance and drawing, using both soft and hard materials. She endeavors to create a certain kind of aesthetic, which brings together handmade and digital processes, coupled with a conceptual thread that runs throughout. The body plays a key role within Lucy’s practice, through process, performance and viewer interaction it transforms an object and our perception.
