Mission Offsite ProjectsIdentify Me | curated by Deirdre Finnerty | in partnership with Jamie Hill Salon
01 July - 08 September 2012
Identify Me is an exhibition that features the work of the artists Catherine Brown, Kerry Evans, Deirdre Finnerty and Ruth Mclees at Jamie Hill’s award winning salon in Swansea Marina. The exhibition, in association with the Mission Gallery and Jamie Hill partnership, invests in the question of identity and identifying whilst positioned in the apt setting of a hair salon.
The exhibition was curated by Deirdre Finnerty, a gallery assistant at Mission Gallery, and the theme stems from her own research and her glass. Her Cabinet of Glass (2011) was influenced by the traditional Welsh dresser that was a common piece of furniture in the home since the 18th century. Upon which was placed the family’s collection of prized possessions and heirlooms, such as the best plates, cups and ornaments.
Catherine Brown’s work brims with emotion through paper-thin porcelain which pridefully preserves her child’s handwriting. The bright and bold portrait painting of Kerry Evans invites us into an imagined world that seems to simultaneously hold dark, broody undertones with a celebratory humour. Ruth Mclees paints industrial resin onto fabric creating a striking visual contrast between tangible material and subject matter.
These four artists are grouped together to unveil methods of representation. Through varying mediums and perspectives, they each present themselves through art, an addition to their identity for us to criticise, a material expression, an offering. It’s all about making an impression.
