Y Chwarel responds to the hidden, often overlooked landscape of two rural quarry sites in Wales. The first site containing limestone, present in the artist’s homeland, and the second being slate, present in the artist’s current land.
Venturing below, above, and with the ground, using video, sound and still image, the artist responds to the quarries and the areas surrounding it as a place for quietude, whilst acknowledging its active past of extracting stone for building materials. What once was an inaccessible ground of danger and pollution, has now been abandoned and returned. A nature space, disused.
