Matthew’s work is predominantly centered around aspects of eastern philosophy, which informs his photography, focusing on the way meditation can foster a relationship between inner and outer worlds. He uses the act of picture-taking to elevate the banal and every-day, and to make strange features of the outside world. However for this series, entitled ‘Something to refer to’, he was granted access to Swansea museums archives and was fascinated to discover an apparent disorder, amongst the innate order that exists in this environment. Pockets of the archive appeared chaotic and somewhat alive. This became something he actively searched out through the residency and tried to impose his own order upon. A book of images was published in an attempt to re-appropriate and form his own archive, and an object in its own right.
