Raising the Bar ResidencyRhiannon Pepper

19 July - 03 August 2014

Rhiannon Pepper | Artists Statement

My work is driven by a desire to make and draw, and to integrate these with writing and an academic perspective. I am inspired by the philosophies and mythology of the classical world; drawing from my academic background in Classics I explore different forms of making and mark making to develop these philosophical themes and their relevance to modern society. Experimenting with materials and processes is an important part of my work, which spans drawing, making, textiles and printing.

The main motivations underlying my practice are a love for learning and playing; with ideas, materials, forms and perceptions. This has made working in an educational setting extremely rewarding, working with students both in the Raising the Bar programme and during my time as Artist in Residence on the Foundation course at UWTSD. Being involved with institutions that value and encourage learning and playing in this way has been inspiring, and seeing how the students have interpreted each brief has been particularly exciting.
