Alternative Dilaogues
Mission Gallery has successfully received funding after applying to Swansea Arts Forum Trust Small Grants Scheme, with funding from the Urban Cultural fund, channelled via the Millennium Commission, for an Artist in Residence. After an overwhelming response, Mission Gallery is pleased to announce that the gallery’s Artist in Residence will be Owen Griffiths. The residency will give Owen space and time to focus on a particular line of enquiry and develop work.
Owen studied Foundation in Art at Swansea Institute of Higher Education and has recently completed a BA Hons in Fine Art atOxfordBrookesUniversity. Owen’s work is centred on the role he can play in contemporary society as a catalyst or instigator; he is also interested in sustainability and environmental issues, working mainly with drawing and performance or live art, such as actions, sound pieces. This is a completely new and exciting venture for the gallery and one that we hope to continue into the future if support and funding can be secured.
Part of the residency requires the artist to complement the gallery’s programme of exhibitions and events in a manner compatible to their own working practice and to consider their engagement and interaction with the public during the residency – we will publicise all events linked to this project.
After one year of the residency being funded by this scheme, Mission Gallery continued to self fund Owen's residency, before handing the studio over to him on a temporary basis. This was so his ground breaking outreach project 'Alternative Dialogues' could be carried out at Mission Gallery over the course of five very successful years, before the project evolved and moved onto off site locations.
