16 September - 18 December 2013

16 September  - 18 December 2013 @ Llwyn y Bryn Campus

This exciting residency opportunity is a partnership between Gower College Swansea and Mission Gallery. With one residency beginning in September 2013 and the other January 2014, this is a fantastic opportunity for two emerging artists, from any discipline, to work with the resources and expertise at both organisations. The successful applicants will be expected to develop their own work; lead workshops at Gower College Swansea; participate in an open studios event; culminating in an artist talk and final profile at Mission Gallery.

The selected artists will be mainly based at Gower College Swansea, Llwyn Y Bryn Campus for 3 months. The residency will include a £1500 Artist Fee, a materials budget, technical assistance, marketing, mentoring, guidance and support in all areas of professional practice. This will also include a profile within Mission Gallery in May 2014. Any emerging artist who could demonstrate outstanding creative ability, combined with some experience of arts education was eligible to apply.

Selected Artists:

Erin Rickard | 16 September  - 18 December 2013
Anne Steves | 7 January - 31 March 2014

Artist Statement: Erin Rickard

"I want to explore what portraiture is in contemporary society and how we read into people and judge them through the information we are presented. My aim is to develop a project across a range of mediums to explore the ways we present ourselves to others and relating it back to contemporary portraiture.

My background includes media studies and I have always held an interest in the symbolism within film. I would like to research the history of propaganda and use the resources available to gain a deeper insight into the theories that surround portraiture. I intend to pursue this investigation through the use of multi-media, with experience of working in numerous art forms my desire is to condense this knowledge into a collection of self portraits, not as traditional paintings, but as a series of videos, soundscapes, sculptures, collages and photographs. Therefore I would be interested in working with students from a range of courses. Making full use of the time, studio space, and facilities available, I want to delve deeper into contemporary portraiture".
