Naori PriestlyMaker in Focus

14 January - 10 February 2013

Naori Priestly, born in Japan, graduated with a Masters Degree in Mixed Media from the Royal College of Art, London and has also studied sculpture in Tokyo and New York. She now works from a London studio.

From an illustrative and autobiographical angle, Naori’s work expresses the dark, sinister side of everyday life with humorous execution. She uses domestic textile craft skills, such as hand-knitting, crochet, embroidery, appliqué and hand-felt in combination with digital technology like computerised embroidery.

From a body of work entitled Kitchen Sink Drama, an oversized embroidered teabag named Mrs. Tracy Twining is asking “Who is the fairest of them all?” features alongside handmade black paper cups, spoons and saucers. Her work tells of tales inspired by folk tales and nursery rhymes ‘where reality, daydreams and nightmares merge into one surreal world’ through an apparent but corrupted playful charm.
