This is a participatory workshop where the artist will encourage participants to make objects that relate to the Maker in Focus exhibition and to themes in our Writer in Resident's written work.

"the “uncanny” is that class of the terrifying which leads back to something long known to us, once very familiar. How this is possible, in what circumstances the familiar can become uncanny and frightening, I shall show in what follows." —Sigmund Freud, The Uncanny,1919

Exploring aspects of the surreal in storytelling: transforming objects, changing scale, creating situations which explore the dark and light within a fairy tale. This workshop explores the notion of the uncanny as developed by Sigmund Freud and the notion of the gaze as conceptualized by Jacques Lacan. In the context of Angela Maddock’s current Maker in Focus installation at Mission Gallery— Mothers are Wolves in Sheep's Clothing.

We will approach the given themes critically with a focus on its expression in Literature and the Visual Arts. The session will close with a creative writing exercise. No previous experience is assumed in the participants, although some reading would be helpful.

All materials provided.
