About Splash Arts Cymru

Splash Arts Cymru is a partnership project funded by the Arts Council of Wales and is aimed at engaging young people identified as at risk of offending.

Mission Gallery have been working alongside Keith Bayliss, a Swansea based artist and Blaen Y Maes school’s So 2 Do initiative to provide arts activities during the summer break and half terms throughout the academic year in 2012 and 2013.

Cutting through Colour with Artist Keith Bayliss

Cutting through Colour was a printmaking project inspired by Katie Allen’s painting exhibition in Mission Gallery in Summer 2012. Over the course of the summer holidays, the pupils created printing blocks, and used those to make their own and group artworks that when completed, were installed in Blaen y Maes Primary School.

The group went on to participate in artist led drawing and discussion sessions,  throughout the October and February half terms. The pupils were encouraged to draw and discuss objects from Mission Gallery’s handling collection, a resource that  was designed to actively engage learners with objects and to develop a deeper understanding of design, construction, materials and how they are used

The project ended with a Private View of the group’s results in Mission Gallery, and was opened by Councillor Mitchell Theaker, Cabinet member for Opportunities for Children and Young people. The participants, parents, teachers and artists attended to celebrate the group’s results.

Lets Face It! With artist Keith Bayliss

Let’s Face it was the second project funded by Splash Arts Cymru and took place in Mission Gallery during the summer holidays in 2013. The pupils worked as a group to create a large scale painted portrait of a face, which was inspired by the work in Richard James’ exhibition of new paintings in Mission Gallery.

Participants experimented with mark making, and were encouraged to work out of their comfort zones to produce an expressive large scale piece using acrylics.

The project was followed by a Private View of the group’s results in Mission Gallery, and was opened by Gaynor Richards MBE High Sheriff of West Glamorgan. The participants, parents, teachers and artists attended to celebrate the groups results.
