Artist Bio
Katherine (or Kat) Silvera-Sunley is a Jamaican woman who has lived in a few places, ending up in an old cold mining town in the valleys of Wales. She studied Fine Art in Bristol England but has been developing her art practice for a long time before that. She grew an interest in ceramics when she was living in Malta as a way to make her art more portable. She creates in her home studio, and loves making art that people can access both financially and intellectually. She believes that there is a place in the world of contemporary / fine art, for work that allows us to access whatever emotion it is we want to access- be that happiness or sadness, without it being something exclusive, complicated or highly conceptual in nature.
Outline
Kat will show you how she hand builds and decorates rings using colourful underglazes. You will also create mini ring dishes and ring cones for you to store your new rings in.
Kat will start you off by doing a demonstration of each stage of ring making.
Then you will have a go, and once everyone has made their rings (you will come away with as many as 2-3) you can work on your choice of a simple ring dish or ring cone. There will be a short break after which you can decorate both your rings and dishes/cones.
Kat will then take your creations away to her studio for firing, and will arrange for you to collect from the gallery at a later date.
High quality artist led workshops are at the heart of what we do here at Mission Gallery. Every ticket purchase contributes towards our Outreach Programme and supports fair compensation for our talented artists.
Due to our venue’s capacity, spaces are limited. If you book onto one of our workshops we would ask you to honour your commitment to attend.
We aim for our workshops to be as accessible as possible, but would ask that you make a donation on the day if you can. Please consider contributing if you are able to support the future workshop and education programmes at Mission Gallery.
