This video piece was inspired by Helen Dennis’ stay in Swansea during February 2016. During that time, Helen spent many mornings exploring the seafront and noticing the changes in light against the backdrop of Port Talbot. Looking across the bay she could see the curious structures of the steel works that generated a unique tension with the surrounding backdrop of the rugged and natural beauty of the rolling hills. The unusual architectural structures of chimneys, exhausts, bellowing smoke, hot air and steam, created a mystical environment, somewhat menacing and alien in appearance yet simultaneously reassuring in its familiarity on the horizon.
This exploratory piece is a looped video of layered imagery juxtaposing the industrial with the natural environment combined into a single sequence. Within the video, Helen breaks down elements of a landscape, repeat them, revisit it and layer the imagery. Using transparent layers the repeated imagery morphs creating a new environment that is familiar and reminiscent of the original yet emits an unexpected rhythm and energy to the familiar landscape. By layering imagery upon imagery, Helen aims to overwhelm the visual senses, giving the viewer the opportunity for the minds-eye to fill in blurred details, reinterpret and discover nuances in the artwork over again.

Ysbrydolwyd y darn fideo gan arhosiad Helen Dennis yn Abertawe yn ystod Chwefror 2016. Yn ystod yr amser hwn, treuliodd Helen nifer bore yn archwilio’r arfordir gan sylwi ar newidiad y golau yn erbyn cefndir Port Talbot. Gan edrych ar draws y bae gwelodd strwythurau diddorol y gweithfeydd haearn yn generadu tensiwn unigryw gyda phrydferthwch naturiol a garw'r bryniau amgylchol. Creodd y strwythurau pensaernïol o simneiau, silindrau, chwythu mwg, aer twym a stem, amgylchedd dirgel mewn edrychiad, lled fygythiol ac estron ond hefyd yn gadarnhaol yn ei gynefindra ar y gorwel.
Fideo cylchol yw’r darn archwiliol yma o ddelweddau haenol yn cydosod yr amgylchedd diwylliannol gyda’r naturiol mewn dilyniant sengl. O fewn y fideo, mae Helen yn torri elfennau o dirlun i lawr, eu hailadrodd, ailymweld a gosod haenau. Gan ddefnyddio haenau tryloyw mae’r haenau ailadroddol yn trawsnewid gan greu amgylchedd newydd sydd yn adnabyddus ac yn ein hatgoffa o’r gwreiddiol ond hefyd yn allyrru rhythm ac egni’r tirlun adnabyddedig. Wrth osod delwedd ar ddelwedd, mae Helen yn bwriadu llethu’r synhwyrau gweledol, gan roi cyfle i lygad mewnol y gwyliwr lenwi’r manylion aneglur, ail-ddehongli a darganfod arlliw yn y gwaith celf eto.
