A Sense of PlaceArts, Health & Wellbeing

30 September - 11 November 2023

A Sense of Place is a partnership project between Mission Gallery and the homelessness charity Crisis. Building on previous successful collaboration, the nine month project provided meaningful activities and skills development to Crisis service users, exploring the question ‘Can art act as a vehicle to counteract loneliness in those impacted by homelessness?’ The project responds to Crisis’ 2016 report I was all on my own; experience of loneliness and isolation amongst homeless people.

The project worked closely with Crisis service users on developing a series of arts workshops.

These workshops were broken into four 6 week mini-projects working alongside five artists, in a variety of different disciplines.

The following artists worked alongside members to create bespoke activities:

Armağan & Nese Aydın, Mosaic

Lisa Burkl, Stained glass

Osian Grifford, Illustration

Sahar Saki, Calligraphy and Persian Design

Within the project we address the recommendations from the 2016 Crisis report and The Royal College of Nursing, by creating the support needed to ensure people have the opportunities to build new networks and re-connect with others and, in the process, challenge the negative labels attached to being homeless.

The outcomes are showcased here at Mission Gallery for 7 weeks. We would like to congratulate Crisis members on the high standard of their artwork, and thank our artists and their assistants for their time and dedication to the project.

This work was made possible through the Arts Council of Wales Arts, Health and Wellbeing fund.
