About Raising the Bar

Raising the Bar is an arts education programme that offers additional opportunities to gifted and talented AS and A Level Art and Design students, to develop their creative practice and knowledge of the visual and applied arts.

Mission Gallery is engaging in collaborative and cross county partnerships with Carmarthenshire County Council, Neath Port Talbot borough Council, and Swansea Metropolitan University to deliver an exciting new experience for pupils from schools and colleges within those areas.

The programme will include six master classes at Mission Gallery and Swansea College of Art UWTSD, using their specialist equipment and facilities. The workshops will be taught by established artists specialising in Drawing, Animation, Photography, Glass, Contemporary Arts Practices and Textile Design and Jewellery.

There will also be group and one to one tutorials/critiques, a careers day to raise awareness of opportunities in the sector with speakers including respected artists, lecturers and curators and a study day and seminar. The groups will also visit a diverse range of exhibitions in Swansea, Cardiff and Bristol based galleries and artist studio groups and collectives.

The programme will finish with a high profile exhibition and celebratory event at Mission Gallery in June 2013 to display the outcome of all work and research produced during the project.

Raising the Bar was originally established as a pilot scheme by Ruthin Craft Centre in Denbighshire
