HomeLocal artists seeking asylum in Swansea
23 March - 18 May 2024
As a City of Sanctuary, Swansea is the home to artists seeking asylum from many nations. But for each displaced individual, ‘Home’ wears a different face.
Often, Home is the start of a long journey towards peace and safety. It might have started among violence and persecution, among pain and sadness, or it might be a sweet memory, yet for each person seeking sanctuary, Swansea has now become a new home.
Through art, people seeking asylum, refugees and migrants share vibrant glimpses of their countries and their traditions. They tell a story, they express a journey, they voice an identity. Their artworks are windows into their communities and their individuality. Going beyond the barriers of language and culture, we step into their world, we travel along their roads, and we feel their emotions and dreams. We connect through the language of art.
We are reminded that for refugees, Home is not just a faraway place on a map. It is a shared humanity. Noticing them will enrich our own journeys.
The pieces presented have been produced by migrants from El Salvador, Guinea, Georgia, Russia, Philippines, Bangladesh and Iran.
