Lewis ProsserThe Maker

19 March - 30 April 2022

Lewis Prosser is a self-taught basket-maker and artist living in Penarth.

His creative practice combines traditional craft with his own adaptations, encompassing basketmaking, performance, floristry, sculpture, costume, and curation.

At present, Prosser’s work explores the character of the primal maker: The craftsperson whose impulse to make things with whatever is immediately available triumphs over careful planning and assembling the right tools. His artistic practise, like that of the primal maker, is characterised by improvisation and negotiation with a range of readily available materials and basic tools.

In his work, basket-making is used as a method for connecting with the landscape, sitting somewhere between labour and leisure, it is a practice which plugs you directly into the seasons and reveals the world as a space for gathering and gifting. One of the oldest and widespread crafts, basketmaking is a way to travel culture and time, it is the tool that brings energy home.

Prosser is also the Director and curator for The Turner House gallery in Penarth.
