New PaintingsRichard James

20 July - 01 September 2013

The human form plays a key role in James’ work; although the subject is figurative it is clear that the physical act of painting itself is his main concern. Colour, form and composition are key. Faces are blown up to a monumental scale and when viewed at distance the work touches on notions of the human condition and connections with sitter and artist. Closer inspection reveals something else -the canvases become painterly, chaotic and fragmented.

“The development of the work through the painting process really interests me - having a strong starting point, and through experimentation and repetition ending up with something that seems harmonious and controlled is the real exciting moment for me.  The viewer can walk away with some kind of narrative, but this is purely coincidental, to me the work is about the subject matter and process that I have taken whilst painting”.
