Mission Student Prize 2009Naomi Smith

29 May - 29 May 2009

The Mission Prize is awarded annually by Mission Gallery to a Third Year BA Fine Art Degree student at Swansea Metropolitan University.

The 2009 winner is Naomi Smith

Naomi Smith is a Wales based artist who works with a diverse range of medium, exploring both personal and universal themes. Always intricate in detail, her work retains the balance between conceptual and perceptual intrigue, while the subtle and poetic notes entice the eye to recognise that which is often overlooked or taken for granted. Utilising sensuous materials such as honey and wax, her work explores concepts of memory and loss within the traditions and skills passed from generation to generation.

Smith uses the current issue of the global disappearance of the bee and the effect this has on the economy as a metaphor to reflect the demise of industries and loss of craftsmanship. Tactile by nature, she is interested in the process of creation and the interaction between her work and its audience. For her the most important conversation is the one between hand and eye.
