Our Swansea, Our StoriesRace Council Cymru
09 November - 16 November 2024
An exhibition by Race Council Cymru.
Our Swansea, Our Stories is a community-focused project dedicated to amplifying the voices of underrepresented individuals and highlighting social injustices, particularly racial inequality. Using storytelling, photography, and exhibitions, the project celebrates the contributions of individuals in Swansea whose different and unique efforts may be unrecognised.
Storytelling is at the heart of the project, serving as a powerful tool to bring about change. By sharing the personal stories of these individuals who have dedicated their lives to making the community better and fighting racial injustice, we aim to inspire meaningful conversations and raise awareness of the ongoing struggles for equality. These narratives document the resilience and determination of individuals whose work has had a lasting impact on the community.
Over the course of the year, we successfully conducted three workshops aimed at empowering marginalised young people. These workshops provided participants with skills in photography and storytelling, equipping them to advocate for social change and share their own stories. This empowerment gives them a platform to challenge perceptions and expose the realities of racial inequality.
The project will culminate in exhibitions hosted at two iconic cultural venues in Swansea: the Mission Gallery and the National Waterfront Museum. These exhibitions will feature a moving collection of photographs and stories, celebrating the contributions of Swansea’s unsung heroes. Each image will include a QR code, allowing visitors to access the full stories of these unrecognised heroes on the Race Council Cymru website. This digital feature ensures that the stories can be explored in depth, extending the impact of the exhibition beyond its physical presence.
Our Swansea, Our Stories is not only about raising awareness but also about driving meaningful, long-term change. By challenging attitudes towards diversity, inclusion, and racial equality, the project aims to spark important conversations that will continue within the community. Through intergenerational dialogue and community engagement, we seek to create a lasting legacy of social justice in Swansea.
We are committed to empowering young people with the skills and confidence needed to become the next generation of social justice advocates. The stories of those who have strived to achieve success and fought for racial justice will not be forgotten, and their contributions will continue to inspire and drive action towards equality.
Through visual storytelling and public involvement, Our Swansea, Our Stories aims to create a more inclusive and equitable future for all. We invite the community to engage with the exhibitions, attend events, and reflect on the powerful stories being shared.
With your support, we can honour Swansea’s diverse communities and contribute to a more just and inclusive society.
