Artist bio

Lewis Prosser is an absurdist basketmaker and artist whose practice explores the intersection of craft and culture. Through teaching, Lewis aims to reconnect people with the land, pass down traditional skills, and encourage new interpretations for the modern day.

Overview

This workshop will guide you through the process of creating a sturdy frame basket with a handle.

Adaptable and practical, frame basketry can be turned to a variety of uses. Frame baskets are among the oldest forms of woven basket and can be found across the world. In Wales, they hold a particular resonance, with images of cockle pickers with their baskets popularised during the 19th century.

In this whistle-stop introduction you’ll learn the principles of constructing a frame using willow hoops, shaping and adding ribs, and exploring different techniques of packing and weaving. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a solid grounding in the fundamentals of this historic craft.

All materials and tools will be provided. No prior experience is necessary.

Please note: basket weaving requires dexterity and can be physically demanding on the hands.
