What you will learn:

Explore a range of vitreous enamelling techniques to create colour and pattern on metal surfaces.

You will have the opportunity to create copper kiln fired samples and exploring sifting, stencils, textures, liquid enamel, sgraffito, screen printing and painting. Examples of the artist’s work incorporating these techniques will be available and Kathryn will also discuss suitable mounting methods for jewellery.

 

Level:

Open to all levels of jewellery makers, but it is most suited to those with some basic metal skills of saw piercing, annealing, soldering and forming. No enamelling experience needed.

 

Additional information for students

Arrival: Meet your college host Anna Lewis in the ALEX foyer (UWTSD, Alexander Road, Swansea) at 9.45am

Parking: Anywhere in central Swansea. They are opposite Glyn Vivian and there is a couple of multi story's nearby https://www.uwtsd.ac.uk/art-design/

Lunch: There is no canteen but HQ café is recommended, which is in the back of the courtyard.

You can also bring in a packed lunch and there will be space in studios (no food in workshops)

 

Please bring the following:

Apron, dust mask, safety specs (if you have them), sturdy shoes please, no sandals.

Drawings or photos for inspiration, it could be for pattern, texture or colour.

If you have any of the following it would be helpful, but Kathryn will have these items if you are not able to bring your own:

• Items from home that would make a good stencil such as lace, paper doilies, mesh, plastic waste, or cut paper stencils

• White/thick glass tile and small palette knife for mixing medium and pigments.

• Small plastic sealable tubs or individual portion jam jars

• A plastic craft mat/tray/chopping board for working on.

• Two-sided Kitchen sponge (yellow sponge/green scratchy).

• Kitchen roll.

• Masking tape

• Old credit cards for screening.

• Paint brushes – bring different sizes.

• Cocktail sticks and pins – for sgraffito effects.

• Pens, pencil, ruler, scissors, paper, craft knife.

• Small stipple sponges and craft stamps can be useful – bring if you have any.

• If you have any unsoldered copper pieces that you would like to enamel– please bring them.

 

 

Due to the climate we are operating in, the classes may be cancelled/postponed at short notice. We will however give you as much notice as we can should this be necessary.
