Exhibition Opening: Weaving Unearthed
Saturday 22 March 2025
Opening: 2 PM
Artist Talk: 3 PM: An illustrated talk focussing on the work leading up to, and is included, in her exhibition 'Weaving Unearthed'. She will discuss the impact that a Creative Wales award from the Arts Council of Wales has had on her work.
Weaving Unearthed, an exhibition of work by sculptor-weaver Sue Hiley Harris, reveals her fascination for experimental woven structures and materials drawn from an analogy with organic root systems. Using silver and copper wire, paper yarn and abstract drawings of organic material, Sue emphasises the environmental value of what is concealed underground.
Sue Hiley Harris is known for the abstract handwoven sculpture she has been making since the late 1990s. This may be understood in relation to constructed abstract art generally, whether in two or three dimensions, in which material, structure and form are interdependent. While the woven sculpture is often derived from geometric shapes, the bare upland landscapes near her home in Wales and in Scotland have also been an important influence.
In 2013 Sue was awarded a Creative Wales Award by the Arts Council of Wales to ‘explore the possibility of making woven body sculpture’. As part of this process she returned to drawing the figure from life after a long break and this, in turn, stimulated an interest in drawing the landscape. She also learned silversmithing skills. Her recent weaving, as a result of the drawing, reveals a new sense of energy and freedom.
Sue Hiley Harris originally pursued fine art at Queensland College of Art in her home town of Brisbane, Australia. Since moving to Britain she studied hand-loom weaving in Bradford and science with the Open University. She has exhibited both internationally and in the United Kingdom and has work in public collections in Wales, England, France and Italy. Sue is a member of both the Welsh Group and 56 Group Wales as well as being a trustee of the Theo Moorman Trust which supports hand-loom weavers.
In March 2025, Sue won a Bronze Award for Wire Innovation, awarded by The Worshipful Company of Gold & Silver Wyre Drawers at the Annual Goldsmiths Craftsmanship & Design Awards; awarded for her piece Tracks IV. The awards promote excellence in jewellery & silversmithing, craftsmanship & design.
