Raising the Bar AlumniPrevious Student: Gemma Yeomans
26 August - 26 September 2020
To coincide with our Criw Celf West exhibition, we celebrate the work of Gemma Yeomans. Gemma is a previous Raising the Bar student, and will showcase a collection of pieces highlighting her development since the programme.
I am a first year student at Swansea College of Art UWTSD, studying Surface Pattern Design. I realised my love for textiles whilst studying A-Level Textiles at Neath College. Experimenting with wonderful colours, textures and materials paired with the encouragement of my tutor, Sarah, allowed me to realise my desire to pursue art.
I had the privilege of being a part of Mission Gallery’s Raising The Bar course where I was able to have my work exhibited in a gallery for the first time, I was able to be creatively inquisitive by investigating mediums such as glass, screen print, enamel and most importantly ceramics.
I discovered a new found love for ceramics which I further pursued during my Jane Phillips Award Raising the Bar Studio Residency at Elysium studios. During the residency, I created a series of ceramics which focused on harmonising the pairing of clay and foliage, whilst able to chat and work alongside other artists who provided me with advice and inspiration.
I’m currently at a very explorative stage of my education. Although I have not yet chosen the route I intend to follow, I am especially passionate about the interior aspect of my course and have recently become more invested in the world of fashion with a special emphasis on structure, pleats and tulle.
The work shown within the Maker space is inspired by the below poem:
Flowers in February
The flowers sing in that summer sun
vivid pink against sunshine yellow,
Reflecting love that is both sweet and mellow
The roses sing in their pink hues,
The roses bloom just for you.
