This Could Be A Dream
27 May - 29 July 2023
Exhibition by Non
Non is an artist based in Cardiff. She is a recent graduate from Cardiff School of Art and Design, currently creating textile installations focusing on themes of queer failure and personal expression.
Building spaces to communicate, without necessity to vocalise, as a way of overcoming fear of social connection. Interweaving depth, texture and colour to nurture the rawness and vulnerability of the work.
Non’s practice delves into the creation of a failed world with installation. Allowing for intricate designs and ideas to develop through creating interactive and tactile exhibits for the audience to manipulate and engage with therefore becoming a part of an illusory realm.

This could be a dream
Non, an emerging artist based in Cardiff and a recent graduate of Cardiff School of Art and Design, unveiled her captivating textiles-based exhibition titled 'This could be a dream' at Mission Gallery on May 27th, 2023.
In case you happened to miss anything during it’s time here at Mission, this blog post covers all the events that unfolded throughout the exhibition. We share Non's live tufting demonstration within the gallery space, our recorded Walk & Talk session, and the array of workshops inspired by the exhibition held in our education space and at the Gŵyl Tawe festival.
Non’s work focuses on themes of queer failure and personal expression. Learn all about this exhibition directly from the artist herself with this Walk & Talk session we filmed with Non.
Throughout the duration of this exhibition, we organized a series of engaging workshops. One such event was the Children's Creature Sculpture Workshop, held on June 2nd and led by our Education Team. The workshop sparked young minds to delve into Non's captivating artwork for inspiration, as they crafted their very own imaginative characters and fantastical worlds!
We had the pleasure of hosting this same workshop again on June 10th at a stall during the Gwyl Tawe festival, a Wesh language festival held this year at the National Waterfront Museum. We were so pleased with the response from numerous families who joined us and enthusiastically took part in sculpting clay creatures.
On June 15th, we extended an invitation to Non, allowing her to use her exhibiting space as a studio for the day. The result was a charming new piece of artwork! Non's unique artistic process involves skillfully utilising a tufting gun and tufting needles to bring her work to life. Click here to view the full process.
To go out with a bang, we hosted four more workshops inspired by ‘This could be a dream’. Kicking off the series was a Children's Mask Making Workshop on July 28th, where participants used textiles and yarn to craft their own wearable masterpieces with distinctive designs.
The excitement continued the next day with a Children's Soft Sculpture Workshop, where once more, textiles and yarn came to life as young creatives fashioned plush sculptural pieces, perfect for both display and cuddling!
We were thrilled to receive positive feedback from visitors who thoroughly enjoyed their experience at 'This could be a dream'. We loved seeing everyone’s posts featuring the #buddybenchmission hashtag, where visitors were encouraged to step into the Fail Snail's purple sanctuary, take a moment to immerse themselves in the surroundings and capture memorable selfies.
Looking ahead, we're excitedly preparing for our upcoming exhibition, WanderLand | A celebration of creative journeys. This exhibit showcases a culmination of works crafted by talented young individuals from various projects. Learn more about it by clicking here!
