“Night gives us the space for things to happen in. Once we pass through twilight into darkness, edges blur; we lose the sense of things. We start to question what is in front of us; we become aware of darkness' ability to multiply risk.  The fear of getting caught.  Within the depths of darkness we are continually in doubt.  Our vision becomes searching, figures and forms appear and disappear in the shadows.  Artists often utilise this area of confusion to draw out forms and ideas, like finding a figure within an abstract painting”

Mission Gallery is pleased to present LLE, an artist-led curatorial project with a focus on contemporary painting. From a base in Wales they aim to showcase their artists via projects, international art fairs and exhibitions.

Lack of light has been a constant feature in the creation of artwork, from the earliest cave paintings through to the works of Rembrandt, and later Walter Sickert. Within this show LLE bring together contemporary works that reach into the darkness, questioning how the lack of light affects the work and what this means to the viewer.

Nightswimming has been programmed in association with the BEEP Painting Biennial, which profiles vibrant contemporary painting and takes place at venues across Swansea throughout the summer. Talks, workshops and other related activities will be programmed for its duration to complement the exhibition.

“Mae’r nos yn rhoi i ni’r gofod i bethau ddigwydd ynddo. Unwaith i ni fynd drwy’r cyfnos i’r tywyllwch, mae ymylon yn pylu; rydym yn colli’r ymdeimlad âphethau. Rydym yn dechrau cwestiynu beth sydd o’n blaenau; rydym yn dod yn ymwybodol o allu’r tywyllwch i luosi peryglon. Yr ofn o gael ein dal. Yn nyfnderoedd tywyllwch, rydym o hyd mewn amheuaeth. Mae ein golwg yn chwilota’n barhaus, mae ffigyrau a ffurfiau’n ymddangos ac yn diflannu yn y cysgodion. Bydd artistiaid yn aml yn defnyddio’r ddrysfa yma i dynnu allan ffurfiau a syniadau, fel canfod ffigwr mewn paentiad haniaethol.”

Pleser o’r mwyaf i Oriel Mission yw cyflwyno LLE, prosiect curadurol dan arweiniad artistiaid sydd â ffocws ar baentio cyfoes. O leoliad yng Nghymru, maent yn anelu at arddangos eu hartistiaid drwy gyfrwng prosiectau, arddangosfeydd a ffeiriau celf rhyngwladol.

Mae diffyg golau’n nodwedd gyson wrth greu gwaith celf, o’r paentiadau cynharaf mewn ogofâu drwodd i weithiau Rembrandt ac yn nes ymlaen Walter Sickert. Yn y sioe hon mae LLE yn dwyn at ei gilydd weithiau cyfoes sy’n ymestyn i’r tywyllwch, gan gwestiynu sut mae’r diffyg golau’n effeithio ar y gwaith a beth mae hyn yn ei olygu i’r gwyliwr.

Mae Nightswimmingwedi cael ei threfnu ar y cyd âBiennale Paentio BEEP sy’n rhoi sylw i baentio cyfoes bywiog ac a gynhelir mewn canolfannau ar draws Abertawe drwy gydol yr haf. Bydd sgyrsiau, gweithdai a gweithgareddau cysylltiedig eraill yn cael eu trefnu i ategu’r arddangosfa tra bydd hi ymlaen.
