Tiger Bay (1959. 105 min) directed by J Lee Thompson is an atmospheric thriller set in Tiger Bay, Cardiff. It is highly acclaimed for its strong pace, stunning black and white cinematography and interesting use of both Cardiff and Newport docklands. A feisty orphaned child (Hayley Mills) by chance witnesses her new friend, a Polish seaman (Horst Buchholz), killing his independent minded lover, Anya, yet she has a fierce loyalty to protect this man from the police. It is interesting to see the industrial landscape of the working docks, now an industrial archaeology as well as the extraordinary multicultural community that was Tiger Bay in the 50’s.
