Tales from the Sea: Knitting a Gansey for Cardiff | Angela MaddockCIVIC at Cardiff Contemporary | Offsite

26 October - 26 October 2014

Sunday 26 October 11am - 4pm

We are knitting a fishing gansey for Cardiff.

Traditionally ganseys are jumpers knit by the wives, daughters, mothers and sisters of fishermen, they are worn on shore and at sea and particularly hard wearing. Gansey patterns are unique to individual fishing ports, though patterns often share similar motifs, including cables, diamonds, anchors and hearts. There are gansey patterns throughout the British Isles, except for Wales. In Swansea we are knitting a gansey for Mission Gallery, formerly a seaman’s mission, and now I am knitting a gansey for Cardiff. Come and add your stitches and loops to the rib, the beginnings of Cardiff’s gansey, and contribute your ideas for the gansey pattern, how will Cardiff’s gansey look, will there be hearts, bays, pennants or stars? Knitters and non knitters welcome.

Cardiff Contemporary is a Cardiff Council initiative co-funded by the Arts Council of Wales, developed in partnership with Cardiff’s visual art, design and architecture communities.
