The ShipwreckAled Simons

14 January - 29 January 2012

Mission Gallery has developed a close relationship with emerging artists, students and graduates from Swansea Metropolitan University and we are offering a dedicated commitment to this important section of our core audience.

A time slot has been made available within the programming year for a student, an emerging, or newly graduated artist to use and try out new ideas or projects. This could take the form of short term interventions, hosting time based or temporary works, as well as showcasing a developing practice. Mentoring, discussion and guidance will feature as a key part in the experience.

Aled Simons: The Shipwreck

Swansea based artist and former SMU student Aled Simons, uses collage, screen print, digital media, musical performance and humour to explore the converging of the unfamiliar within the familiar. A focus on experiences, memories and past, leads to the contemplation of unknown futures and perceived constants at times cultivating a post apocalyptic atmosphere.

“A ten-year-old tree behind eighty-year-old black and white buildings glued to a cardboard background. Grandmother's flower arrangements filling the sky above the housing estate where your cousin used to play hop scotch. A photograph of me searching for your childhood next-door neighbor and your teenage brother's bedroom, shipwrecked. Past and future meet, converge then pass each other by”

Related events will also take place to coincide with this exhibition during January with Swansea based Artist & Studio collective Supersaurus, plus an event to celebrate  'Art's Birthday'.
