Craft FocusAdam Buick

19 September - 31 October 2009

By adding some of the essential and actual elements of the natural landscape to his work, Adam Buick is able to show how his practice is embedded in a study of his surroundings. Through his work, he reference places that have significance to his life within the landscape. Adam intentionally source his own local materials, using them unrefined to show his personal relationship with the landscape, the materials within it and past experiences from where they were collected.

The shapes he throws are based on Moon Jars, a Korean form from the Choson Dynasty originally made from plain white porcelain. Due to the making process the subtleties of the form are beyond complete control  - something which Adam relishes and nurtures. Adam was struck by their serenity and simplicity - desiring perfection yet the form which he strives for is far from perfect. Paradoxical though it is, this is what fascinates him what drives him continue. This pure jar form has become his canvas, into which he incorporates selected sources of local materials such as clays, rocks and seaweeds. Adam Buick is inspired to do this through a fascination with landscape and how the resources within it can be utilised.
