Mission Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of work by Swansea Metropolitan University BA Photography students. Selected exhibitors have been invited to consider their work in relation to a series of images or a short time-based piece, broadly addressing the title above.

This infamous contradiction in terms: "... a certain but fugitive testimony..." is just one of the poetic descriptions that Roland Barthes offered for the photographic image thirty years ago in (probably the most influential book ever published on the subject) Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography. As Geoffrey Batchen recently pointed out, the fact we cannot get beyond these words and are still puzzling over the nature of this ever-changing medium is a testament to both Barthes's book and photography itself.1

Addressing notions of testimony through an exploration of the medium's relationship to identity, time and truth, this is an exhibition as much about photography as it is an exhibition of photographic imagery.
