Tales From The Bunker Launch Event

12 September - 12 September 2014

7pm Friday 12th September

talesfromthebunker is a new initiative offering an artist led view of the city from the perspective of the High Street. It will take on the form of a regular series of printed and online zines, pop-up arts events, exhibitions or even demonstrations.

talesfromthebunker will be launched at the Mission Gallery on Friday 12th September from 7pm. All the content submitted for the first zine will be on display plus a chance for people to contribute ideas and content towards the next edition. There will be performance by Stephen Donnelly, Kapspike & Goebbels,Tracy Harris, Jason & Becky & the Glitterationist International, films by David Marchant and artwork by Anna Barratt and Bruce Risdon. A soundtrack to the evening will be provided by David Philips all within the setting of Mission Gallery’s latest exhibition Jonathan Powell: When We Build Again.

Each issue will be the result of a call out for artists’ contributions to a printed folded document which will be filled with drawings, photographs, stories, questions and answers with further content uploaded to the talesfromthebunker blog.

Themes for Issue 1 and the evening’s activities: We want to chronicle the past, present and future of Swansea's High Street.

At its worst the High Street has been sordid, ruinous and contaminating. An area to avoid and forget, let down by years of neglect and mismanagement.

The blame has been passed around so many times from the Council to town planners, the architects to the people who inhabit the area. This now has to stop. Once decaying, abandoned and unloved, the High street is now being pulled back from the brink.... The High Street is changing and artists have a crucial say in what happens..... It’s up to you!

The night’s events will act as a sort of wake to the failures and negative aspects of the streets past; whilst also raising a toast to its exciting future....... but at the same time keeping a firm watchful eye on its present.
